Certified biomethane: Burgo Group evolves its energy mix

A new step in Burgo Group's energy supply strategy
Burgo Energia, the Burgo Group company specialising in energy management and procurement, has been awarded the tender issued by Italy's Energy Services Manager (GSE) for the procurement of up to 100 million cubic metres of certified biomethane through Guarantees of Origin (GOs).
The biomethane will be used exclusively at Burgo Group's production sites, where it will progressively contribute to the evolution of the energy mix supporting manufacturing processes. The initiative marks another step in the Group's strategy to diversify its energy sources and increase the use of renewable gas across its industrial operations.
The role of biomethane in manufacturing processes
For an energy-intensive sector such as the paper industry, the availability of certified biomethane represents a practical and readily available solution for progressively reducing reliance on fossil natural gas.
The increasing use of biomethane across the Group's production sites will help reduce fossil CO₂ emissions associated with energy consumption and support the development of a range of papers produced at facilities that integrate renewable gas into their energy mix. This provides a concrete response to the growing expectations of brand owners, converters, publishers and end users seeking products that contribute to emission reduction objectives throughout the value chain.
An integrated approach to the energy transition
Produced through the recovery and processing of organic feedstocks and by-products, biomethane contributes to the diversification of energy sources and can support the transition of energy-intensive manufacturing sectors.
«For a hard-to-abate industry such as the paper sector, decarbonisation requires concrete, reliable and readily deployable solutions», said Luca Sassoli, Chief Executive Officer of Burgo Energia. «Being awarded the GSE tender is a highly significant achievement for Burgo Energia and the entire Group, as it enables us to integrate increasing shares of certified biomethane into our production energy mix. This marks a further step forward in Burgo's energy-transition journey, combining the progressive reduction of emissions with the competitiveness and continuity of our industrial operations».
The initiative forms part of Burgo Group's broader energy-transition journey. In recent years, the Group has strengthened investments in energy efficiency, self-generation from renewable sources, technological innovation, and the procurement of renewable energy and alternative fuels. Through Burgo Energia, the Group continues to develop an increasingly integrated energy model focused on industrial competitiveness, operational resilience and the progressive reduction of emissions associated with its activities.
Environmental sustainability and social responsibility have always been paramount in the Burgo Group's business approach. The Group commits maximum attention to these issues due to the intrinsic cultural and practical value of its product: paper.
